First Group victory for Hannon's Havana Gold
Reports: Newmarket, Thursday
Somerville Tattersall Stakes (Group 3) 7f, 2yo
HAVANA GOLD, 6-5 favourite, secured his first Group race under a well-timed Richard Hughes ride on Newmarket's Rowley Mile.
The juvenile's only defeat came in August when the saddle slipped in a Listed race at Deauville, leaving Ryan Moore on the turf, but there were no mishaps at Newmarket as he secured a fourth career victory.
Hughes had the Richard Hannon-trained colt positioned at the rear of the field and only came through to challenge in the final furlong, when Ebn Arab, Well Acquainted and stablemate Glean were also prominent.
Havana Gold finished stronger than any of his rivals, however, and stretched out in the final yards to win from Well Acquainted by a length and a half.
Assistant trainer Richard Hannon jnr said: "This looked easier than going for the Royal Lodge here on Saturday. He will be
better over a mile and is a nice horse for next year."
Paddy Power handed the colt a 20-1 quote as they added him to their Qipco 2,000 Guineas market.
