Hannon smashes
annual winners record

RICHARD HANNON’S sensational 2013 got even better on Friday as Musical Comedy provided the former champion trainer with a new British record of 219 winners in a calendar year.

After topping the double century for the first time in 2010 with a whopping 210 winners, Hannon managed a staggering 218 wins in 2011 and 2012 but looks likely to leave that figure well in arrears this year after securing his new personal best with more than two months of the year remaining.

Mark Johnston had previously held the record with 216 wins in 2009 before Hannon set a new benchmark in 2011.

Hannon said: “We’ve had a good year and we ain’t finished yet. We’ve got good staff and everyone has worked hard this year."

Hannon’s remarkable year has already included Classic success with Sky Lantern as well Group 1 wins for Toronado and Toormore and he will now be hoping to secure the title of champion trainer for a fourth time.

Hannon currently leads closest rival Aidan O’Brien by more than £300,000 in the trainer’s championship, which is based on prize-money rather than winners, and is likely to be decided on Saturday’s £3.4 million British Champions Day at Ascot.

Earlier on Friday, Richard Hughes achieved the landmark figure of 200 winners in a calendar year.

“I’m delighted to get 200. I set out to get that total at the start of the year," Hughes said.

"Without Richard Hannon I’d been getting 40 winners and he drives everyone forward.”
