July Cup winner Mayson retired to stud

BRITISH Champions Sprint second favourite Mayson has been retired to stud with Cheveley Park after failing to recover in time from a bruised foot to line up in the Group 2 at Ascot on Saturday.

A five-length winner of the July Cup, Mayson was denied a second Group 1 of the year in the Prix de l'Abbaye by the fast-finishing Wizz Kid. It was in the Abbaye that Mayson suffered the injury and with limited time, was unable to make a full recovery in time.

Trainer Richard Fahey said: "He was a wonderful horse to train and had a super temperament. He won an Abernant, Palace House and July Cup all in one season, which takes a bit of doing, and was just beaten at Longchamp.

"We were really looking forward to running him at Ascot, but it wasn't to be."

Cheveley Park managing director Chris Richardson said: "We feel Mayson offers breeders a very exciting speed option for their mares and hugely compliments the already proven portfolio of stallions currently standing at Cheveley Park Stud".

Mayson won five of his 18 career starts but it was this season as a four-year-old that he came of age winning the Listed Abernant Stakes and the Group 3 Palace House at Newmarket on the Rowley Mile as well as  the Group 1 July Cup at Newmarket's July course.
