Alben can justify Cup price say connections

ALBEN STAR has every chance of justifying his new market-leader position for the Blue Square Stewards' Cup following his victory at Haydock on Saturday, according to connections.

The four-year-old's three-quarters of a length victory over Morache Music resulted in bet365 making Alben Star 12-1 co-favourite for the Goodwood handicap on August 4, while BetVictor make him 12-1 joint favourite with Mac's Power.

Robin O'Ryan, assistant to trainer Richard Fahey, said yesterday: "He'd definitely have a big chance at Goodwood and that's the plan.

"He won despite the ground at Haydock. It was a nice prize to pick up along the way and the Stewards' Cup will be right up his street."

A crack at Frankel in the Qipco Sussex Stakes at the same meeting has been mooted for stablemate Gabrial but O'Ryan pointed out: "He is entered in a conditions race at Newmarket on Thursday, but it all depends on the ground.

"We'll monitor the situation at Newmarket throughout the week; if it comes right for him we could go to Newmarket, if not, we'll then look towards Goodwood."

O'Ryan confirmed that Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Maktoum's Derby fifth Mickdaam has probably had his last race for the North Yorkshire yard.

"Mickdaam will most likely have had his last run for Richard and he will go back to Mike De Kock now," O'Ryan said. "He's a nice horse and I think he'll have a bit of a break now."
