Owner-breeder Mead dies aged 75
REX MEAD, a long-time owner-breeder with former trainer Toby Balding and more recently Jonathan Geake, died in hospital on Monday at the age of 75. He had been unwell for some time.
Mead from Compton Down, near Winchester, Hampshire, where he formerly ran his own stud and bred a string of winners going back many years, many in partnership with Mrs Penny van Straubenzee.

Balding said: "Rex had some very good animals including Rivers Rhapsody, who was the dam of Ripples Maid, and Trwyn Cilan, who won the Bovis Handicap at Ascot.
"He bred Richmond Stakes winner Nomination and Ffestiniog, and later with Penny consigned plenty of horses to the sales and made very good money on them."
No date has yet been arranged for the funeral.
