MELBOURNE CUP bridesmaid Red Cadeaux gained a deserved reward when running out the winner of the Yorkshire Cup on the Knavesmire.
The Ed Dunlop-trained six-year-old, beaten only a nose at Flemington last November, and again runner-up in the Sagaro Stakes on his return earlier this month, challenged long-time leader Harris Tweed approaching the furlong pole and stayed on well despite drifting markedly left close home.
Glen's Diamond stayed on well for second, with 9-4 favourite Harris Tweed third.
Harris Tweed, fresh from his win in the John Porter Stakes, set the tempo at a fair clip with Electrolyser stalking him.
The race began in earnest approaching the final furlong when Tom McLaughlin challenged on Red Cadeaux and he soon had Harris Tweed's measure.
The well-supported Times Up travelled well until getting caught flat-footed in the home straight before staying on well to finish fourth.
Disappointment of the race was Godolphin's Be Fabulous, who finished tailed off.
Paddy Power make Red Cadeaux a 16-1 shot to go one better in this year's Melbourne Cup at Flemington on November 6.
