A winner last time out on at Kempton, Maverik adapted perfectly to the unique demands of the frozen lake at St Moritz to record a three-quarter length victory under Jim Crowley from the locally-trained odds-on favourite Hoist The Sail in the 16,000 CHF (£11,000) Gunter Sachs Memorial Race over 1m1f.

Beckett tweeted: "Great day had by all. Long day, longer night. Winning prize-money just about covered champagne bill."

>>Earlier in the day the trainer Philipp Schaerer, who also trains Hoist The Sail, saw his African Art land the feature event of the meeting, the Guebelin Grossser Preis von St Moritz, a Listed race over 1m2f worth 131,131 CHF (£90,000).

Formerly trained by Brian Meehan, African Art, who despite his generous odds of 23.2-1 was a previous course winner at St Moritz, was always prominent under Freddy di Fede, and held on for a comfortable two and a half-length success  from the German-trained Flash Dance, with another Schaerer runner, Schuetzenjunker, third.

The three British-trained challengers in the race, Calypso Magic representing Linda Jewell, and the Mark Johnston pair The Bells O Peover and Licence To Till, finished well beaten, The Bells O Peover fared best, coming home 13th of the 17 runners.
