TONY SWEENEY, Ireland's foremost racing historian and much-respected racing journalist, has died at the age of 81 following a heart attack.
Sweeney was admitted to St James's Hospital in Dublin last week and had been unconscious in the intensive care unit before passing away on Monday night.
He was Irish racing correspondent for the Daily Mirror for 42 years up to 1997 and had also written for many other publications in Ireland and abroad, including the Evening Press and, until his recent illness, the Irish Times.
With his late wife Annie and bookmaker and historian Francis Hyland he produced the Sweeney Guide to the Irish Turf, a statistical history of racing in Ireland, which was published in 2002.
