ROBERT THORNTON will be back in action as soon as the weather permits, after being passed fit by the BHA's chief medical adviser, Dr Michael Turner, in London on Wednesday.
Thornton, who has been sidelined since suffering extensive ligament damage to his right knee in a fall on Hell's Bay at Newton Abbot on July 5, was confident of the outcome after pleasing his surgeon, Jonathan Webb, on Monday, but getting the official clean bill of health still came as a relief.
“I’ll be back on the racecourse as soon as the weather breaks. I’m going down to Alan King’s on Friday and we’ve plenty to run when we do get back," said an excited Thornton.
He added: “Dr Turner says my recovery is quite remarkable. The initial prognosis was that I’d be out for nine months, Dr Turner thought seven, and I’m back after four. The help I’ve had from everybody at Oaksey House has made the difference.
"They’ve done me the world of good. If this had happened just a couple of years ago, before we had the facilities at Oaksey House, I’d have been struggling.”
Asked which horses he is most looking forward to riding on his return, Thornton replied: "I’m really looking forward to getting back on Medermit, who would run this weekend if the weather breaks, the novice hurdler Habbie Simpson and juvenile hurdler Pantxoa.”
