Star completes autumn double for connections
Report: Germany, Sunday
Krefeld: Herzog von Ratibor-Rennen (Group 3) 1m½f, 2yo
OWNER Marlene Haller, trainer Roland Dzubasz and jockey Alexander Pietsch landed a notable double at Krefeld on Sunday, when their Flamingo Star ran out a narrow winner of the Herzog von Ratibor-Rennen just a fortnight after the same connections' Limario had won Germany's other big autumn two-year-old race, the Preis des Winterfavoriten.
It was double joy for Haller, as she also bred the winner, who is by Areion, who raced in her colours and in whom she still owns a half-share.
She can thank her jockey for this success, as Pietsch rode a strong finish to get back up on the line to win from the 6-4 favourite Protectionist, who had gone half a length up in the final furlong. But Flamingo Star, who paid over 16-1 on the tote, rallied gamely to score by a nose. The two French raiders Beatrice and Big Memory finished close up in third and fourth.
Protectionist wandered a bit in the straight, hampering his stable companion Stellato, and trainer Andreas Wöhler explained: "He is still very green and we are satisfied, as he ran a good race."
Flamingo Star is a three-parts brother to this year's Italian Derby winner Feuerblitz and trainer Dzubasz now has good prospects of becoming champion trainer on Germany for the first time.
