Ffos Las abandons Saturday's meeting
FFOS LAS has abandoned Saturday's meeting, featuring the SIS Live Welsh Champion Hurdle, owing to frost and snow.
Officials had been optimistic about staging the fixture earlier in the week but snow and a succession of bitterly cold nights put the meeting in jeopardy before a temperature dip to -9C on Wednesday night scuppered all hopes.
Clerk of the course Tim Long said on Thursday morning: "We camein early this morning and we were facing -9C.
"There had been a -2C 24 hours earlier and we decided to wait and see what it looked like, but once there'd been a -9C it was hard frost under the sheeting.
"Today it might get above freezing but Friday and Saturday it might not, so there was no point getting hopes up and getting people to do extra work when there was no chance of racing."
As for the Welsh Champion Hurdle, which featured 2009 Smurfit Kappa Champion Hurdle winner Punjabi among its entries, Long hopes the race can be rescheduled.
"We're going to talk to the BHA in the hope of moving the Welsh Champion Hurdle to our fixture a week on Sunday,"he said.
