Perce Rock made to work for hurdles win

Report: Punchestown, Monday

Go Racing In Kildare Hurdle 2m4f, 5yo+

PERCE ROCK had to be strongly ridden but still obliged as the odds-on favourite at Punchestown on Monday.

The Tommy Stack-trained seven-year-old, a Grade 3 winner over fences in 2008, was sent off the 2-5 favourite and raced in behind Ruby Walsh on Freds Benefit for much of the 2m4f hurdle race.

He briefly looked in trouble entering the home straight but jockey Alan Crowe drove him past Freds Benefit to record a four-length success.

Freds Benefit was second at 5-2 and 100-1 outsider Morereadythanilook was third. The Gordon Elliot-trained Buachaill On Eirne slipped up approaching the second last hurdle.

Fozzy Stack, son and assistant to the winning trainer, said: "He is a bit more relaxed this year, he has grown up a bit. We've no plans, he may return to chasing."
