Edward Whitaker: "The awards ceremony was unbelievable"
PICTURE: Steve Rowe/SJAPost's Whitaker is Sports Photographer of the Year
The Racing Post's Edward Whitaker was on Monday named Sports Photographer of the Year at the British Sports Journalism Awards in London.
Presented with his trophy by Michael Parkinson, Whitaker, 46, dedicated his award to his late father, James. It was Whitaker's second triumph in the prestigious category afrer he won it in 2008.
A photographer with the Post for 25 years, Whitaker collected a second award on Monday for the best Specialist Portfolio.
He said: "The awards ceremony was unbelievable. I enjoyed it more this second time around - the first in 2008 had been a bit of a shock. I never lose sight of the fact I'm very fortunate to be given the opportunity by the Racing Post to shoot the pictures that create these portfolios; they encourage me every step of the way."
What was he looking forward to most of all at Cheltenham? "The World Hurdle because I think Oscar Whisky will give Big Buck's a proper race. It would be wonderful to see them neck and neck after the last."
Also at the awards, the Post's Steve Palmer was highly commended by the judges in the category for the BetVictor Sports Betting Writer won by Ed Hawkins of the Times.
