Additional all-weather track to open at Fairview
South Africa: A Polytrack course will be added to the turf circuit at Fairview later this year, leading horseracing and Tote betting company Phumelela has announced.
The installation of the new track is scheduled to start in the next few weeks and should take about eight months to complete.
Phumelela's proposal to install the Polytack surface at Fairview has been given the go ahead and comes after they received permission from the East Cape Gambling Board to close nearby Arlington racecourse back in November.
The SAR40 million (£3.2m) project, which also includes upgrading the grandstand facilities at the track, must begin by June and be completed within a year, although confirmation of approval for a slight variation to the proposed track configuration is still being awaited.
The move is part of Phumelela's strategy to sustain horseracing in the region. Other tracks to go through a similar process include Turffontein and the Vaal.
