Cheltenham Gold Cup entry for Flemenstar

FLEMENSTAR has been entered for the Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup, although a decision about which Grade 1 event the Peter Casey-trained eight-year-old will contest at the Festival will be delayed until after he runs in the Hennessy Gold Cup at Leopardstown on February 9.

After Flemenstar finished third in the Lexus Chase at Leopardstown last month there was much speculation regarding which Cheltenham races he would be entered for, with connections expressing doubts about his stamina for the 3m2f Gold Cup trip and suggesting he might not be given an entry.

However, Casey said: "Flemenstar has been entered for the Gold Cup, the Queen Mother Champion Chase and the Ryanair Chase. The Hennessy will be his next race and no further plans will be made until after we see how he gets on at Leopardstown.

"We felt he deserved another chance over 3m and we're in no hurry to make any Cheltenham decisons until after the Hennessy. He's in super form and enjoying regular visits to the beach."

Flemenstar took a walk in the Gold Cup betting after his Lexus Chase defeat behind Tidal Bay and First Lieutenant. Beaten a head and half a length in the Leopardstown event, he is now as high as 16-1 with BetVictor for the Cheltenham showpiece on March 15.

He is also a best-priced 5-1 to get the better of Sprinter Sacre in the Champion Chase and 5-1 favourite for the Ryanair Chase.
