Sugar Boy snaps O'Brien's stranglehold
Report: Leopardstown, Sunday
Eyrefield Stakes (Listed) 1m1f, 2yo
SUGAR BOY stamped his class on this Listed event, benefiting from a clever ride from Chris Hayes, who appeared to find the best of the Leopardstown ground.
The majority of the riders seemed intent of shunning the ground against the inside rail but Hayes took it to a greater extreme, racing the widest of all aboard the son of Authorized, who was chasing a hat-trick for trainer Patrick Prendergast.
Travelling comfortably within himself, Sugar Boy ranged along side leaders Orgilgo Bay and Cest Notre Gris swinging into the straight and soon asserted under a confident Hayes.
The disappointment of the race was Twilight Zone, who was bidding to give Aidan O'Brien a sixth win in the last ten runnings of this. Racing on the unfavoured ground closest to the rail, he faded in the straight to finish last of the seven runners.
Coolibah, who met plenty of trouble in running, made some eye-catching late progress to fill the runner-up spot.
Prendergast praised Hayes for his tactics, saying: "He's as tough as nails. Everything I throw at him, he just does it and comes back for more.
"Chris gave him a clever ride as he is just a relentless galloper that doesn't stop. He's just kept improving throughout the season. He was on the market but nobody came for him and I'm delighted they didn't now.
"We'll start him off in a Derby trial next season and take it from there. Hopefully he'll keep improving just like he has done this year."
