Panther down in trip for Melbourne Cup prep

GOODWOOD CUP winner Brown Panther takes a significant step down in trip and class on his return to the Sussex Downs when he goes on trial for the Melbourne Cup.

Brown Panther has a 5lb penalty for the Listed Greene King Foundation Stakes (3.40) courtesy of his success over Ahzeemah in the Group 2 Goodwood Cup last month, but having been forced to miss the Irish St Leger with a temperature, trainer Tom Dascombe is hoping he can put up a good performance.

Dascombe said: "This race wasn't the plan but it's what we have ended up with as it's our last chance before he has to go into quarantine.

"It's far from ideal that he's dropping back to a mile and a quarter, but hopefully he can run a nice race and give us some encouragement for Melbourne."

Brown Panther takes on eight rivals, including three-year-old Sugar Boy, who is set to have his first start for Marco Botti, and Grandeur, seventh in the Grade 1 Arlington Millon on his last start.

There is also Flat action at Kempton and Redcar, plus a jumps meeting at Perth.
