FORMER Flat performer Advisor enhanced his claims for JCB Triumph Hurdle success at the Cheltenham Festival with a smooth win at Ascot on Saturday.

William Hill, Totesport and Boylesports trimmed the Paul Nicholls-trained four-year-old to 16-1 (from 25), while Stan James went 14-1 (from 20) after a three-length success over Barwell Bridge. Outsider Prince Pippin ran with credit to finish third at 25-1.

Advisor, racing in the colours of The Royal Ascot Racing Club, opened his hurdling account at Newbury in December and followed up here under Ruby Walsh.

Tracking the early pace set by Dark Oasis, Advisor, the 10-11 favourite, was always going well and once he quickened in the closing stages the result was never in doubt.

Barwell Bridge, sent off a 2-1 shot, also travelled smoothly, but was unable to maintain his 100 per cent record since also switching codes.

Nicholls said: "This horse has pleased me so much. He'll not run now before Cheltenham.

"Harry Herbert [of the owners] thought he would make an ideal jumper. He was gelded after he ran on the Flat and he has improved physically ever since.

"There have been no [Triumph] stars so far and I have one of the favourites in Pistolet Noir."

Highlighting the legacy of the race's previous winners, including Zaynar and Binocular in the last two years, Nicholls added: "The race has been a really good pointer for the Triumph. I really like him. He jumps, he travels and a better quality race will suit him better."
