Ortensia not certain to face Caviar in Lightning

Australia: Trainer Paul Messara has yet to decide if Ortensia will line up in the Lightning Stakes a week on Saturday when she would face Black Caviar in a clash between Australia's sprinting queens.

Like Black Caviar, whose name is featured in the title of the Lightning Stakes, Ortensia travelled to Britain last summer, landing Goodwood's King George Stakes and the Group 1 Nunthorpe at York.

She warmed up for the Flemington race at Rosehill on Tuesday, but Messara has yet to firm up plans.

''She worked nicely and I was pleased with her effort,'' said Messara.

''She has pulled up well and is great but I just want to see how she does over the next few days before making up my mind about running in the Lightning.''

Ortensia has not been in action since finishing 12th of 13 in the Sprint Cup at Haydock in September, while Black Caviar's last appearance came when she narrowly captured the Diamond Jubilee at Royal Ascot, stretching her unbeaten run to 22.

She spent Wednesday at Port Phillip Bay in Melbourne and trainer Peter Moody said: ''It's a nice day for a swim and she loves it down there."

Black Caviar, bidding for a hat-trick of wins in the Lightning, beat Ortensia by six and a quarter lengths when they met in the Patinack Farm Classic at Flemington in November 2010.
