O'Brien breaks record with Marvellous ride
JOSEPH O'BRIEN beat Mick Kinane's 20 year record for most winners in an Irish Flat season when he made it 116 for the year on Marvellous at Navan.
O'Brien, who looks guaranteed to claim a second successive champion jockeys' title, was bringing up a double for the afternoon having won the previous race on Sardinia. Both his winners were trained by his father, Aidan.
Not only was Marvellous a landmark winner for O'Brien, it was also one which demonstrated his abilities in the saddle as the daughter of Galileo found herself outpaced early on in the mile contest before responding well to her rider's urgings to cross the line comfortably in front of I'm Yours.
"At the start of the season I said to myself that it would be great to ride 100 winners so when I reached that amount I was delighted," said O'Brien.
"Obviously I'm thrilled but I must thank all the owners who have given me the chance to ride all these good horses. I'm in a privileged position and thankfully the horses have been running well all through the year."
His father added: "I'm delighted for Joseph but a big thank you has to go to all of our owners. We're in a very lucky position. He's been doing well and it's not easy for him as nine stone is his minimum weight so he's had to work hard."
