Nadiya De La Vega thumps Grade 3 rivals

Report: Fairyhouse, Tuesday

John & Chich Fowler Memorial European Breeders Fund Mares Chase (Grade 3) 2m4f, 5yo+

TONY McCOY, Nicky Henderson and JP McManus teamed up, as they so often have in big races in recent years, to win the Grade 3 mares' chase with 7-2 favourite Nadiya De La Vega.

Taken wide by McCoy, Nadiya De La Vega was always prominent and with Belle Brook on her inside duelling for the lead the pace was strong.

The advantage switched several times with every slight jumping error seized upon by the other, however McCoy was steering a noticeably wider course, possibly in search of better ground or just to try and keep Nadiya De La Vega out of a battle. Whatever his motive, it worked.

Turning for home he had soon asserted on the Henderson-trained seven-year-old, whose last five runs have come at Cheltenham, though the Davy Condon-ridden Burn And Turn was travelling ominously in her slipstream.

McCoy was not for passing however and as he drove for home in typically gritty fashion, Burn And Turn could not go with Nadiya De La Vega and just held on for third, with the staying-on Avondhu Lady taking the runners-up birth.

Frank Berry, racing manager to owner JP McManus, said: "The mare jumped great because she had a bit of room. She hates being crowded. We'll go to Punchestown with her I'd say."
