14-1 shot Cornas comes good at Sandown
Report: Sandown, Saturday
32Red Handicap Chase(Class 2) 2m, 5yo+
THERE was a minor upset at Sandown on Saturday when 14-1 shot Cornas recorded a comfortable victory in the 32Red Handicap Chase.
The Nick Williams-trained winner landed a Grade 3 at Limerick in October and had not performed badly in races at Exeter and Cheltenham.
Despite that, punters allowed him to go off at 14-1 and jockey Leighton Aspell, who was riding his first winner for the stable, had few worries on top.
Aspell, who was replacing regular rider Daryl Jacob, said: "It's a great ride for me and connections were quite confident.
"He still ran creditably against the big boys [at Exeter and Cheltenham] and has been knocking on the door.
"They went a good gallop without it being break-neck and he travelled well.
"He took me nicely into the race and finished really well."
Tchico Polos (7-1), who won the Exeter race Cornas ran in, finished two and three-quarter lengths behind in second, while Oh Crick, who returned at 9-1, claimed third for the Alan King-Robert Thornton combination.
