Strong Suit storms to Challenge success

Report: Newmarket, Saturday

Burj Khalifa Challenge Stakes (Group 2) 7f, 3yo+

STRONG SUIT was in a class of his own as he powered clear in impressive style under Richard Hughes to set up an assault on the Breeders' Cup Mile at Churchill Downs on November 5.

The Richard Hannon-trained 13-8 favourite, carrying top weight, was only narrowly preferred in the betting ahead of Chachamaidee at 7-4, but in the race there was no doubting his superiority.

He romped home by four and a half lengths in a time just 0.56sec outside the course record.

Chachamaidee was well beaten in second, with Maqaasid (6-1) a nose behind in third.

Hughes said: "He was very good. We got a lovely lead off the Irish horse [Across The Rhine] and they went very quick. He's got so much speed, he's an easy ride.

"He's a very good horse and could win over five, six or seven furlongs. We were so disappointed after the Greenham that we had him checked out and luckily we found something with his breathing."

Strong Suit is 5-1 (from 8) for the Breeders' Cup Mile with William Hill and, looking forward to that assignment, Hughes added: "It's made for him. It'll be rock-hard ground and if anything he just goes left under pressure, so it's the right way round."

Hughes looked untroubled throughout as he tracked pacesetter Across The Rhine. He struck for home 2f out and quickly opened a decisive lead. With his seven rivals toiling behind him, he looked every inch a Group 1-class colt as he pulled well clear.

Strong Suit was scoring for the first time in the colours of Qatar Bloodstock, the Sheikh Fahad Al Thani-backed operation that purchased the three-year-old after his win in the Group 2 Celebration Mile at Goodwood in August.

David Redvers, Sheikh Fahad's racing manager, said: "It's the Breeders' Cup Mile all the way now, that's why we bought him."
