NEWMARKET'S two-day Craven meeting, traditionally the first fixture of the year at Headquarters, is expected to start on good ground on Wednesday afternoon.
Clerk of the course Michael Prosser said on Tuesday: "The going is good. The GoingStick read 8.3 at 3.30pm which is slightly higher than it was on Monday afternoon. We had 1.5 millimetres of rain this morning, and managed to dodge the showers this afternoon.
"Rain is forecast for Wednesday, coming in at around midday. We're expecting between 4-6mm through the afternoon."
A Wednesday morning update revealed Newmarket had a dry night and consequently the going remained good.
Racegoers attending Thursday's card, which is highlighted by the Group 3 Novae Bloodstock Insurance Craven Stakes, are less likely to get wet according to the weather forecast.
Prosser added: "Thursday is expected to be more pleasant. It will get warmer, with temperatures of around 12C, although there is just the possibility of an isolated shower."
