Final Touch speeds to Telegraph victory
Report: New Zealand, Saturday
Trentham: Telegraph Handicap (Group 1) 6f, turf
FINAL TOUCH (Karen Parsons/Chris Johnson) carried top weight to victory and claim her second Group 1 in three starts on Saturday.
The five-year-old mare snaffled the Group 1 Captain Cook Stakes over a mile at Trentham last month before going down in Group 3 company over 7f on her next outing.
Dropped back in distance for a third time, Final Touch raced towards the rear of the field in the initial stages before surging clear in the final furlong to take the prize. Xanadu was a length and a quarter back in second with favourite Burgundy third.
"It's great to be on a nice horse this season. She has stepped up and done everything I have asked of her," Johnson told New Zealand broadcaster Trackside. "I thought it was quite a good training effort to bring her back from a mile to win this race.
"She got back a little way. She just came out of the gates just fairly but halfway through (the race), she travelled nice and just needed a bit of room."
