GOLD SHIP (Naosuke Sugai/Hiroyuki Uchida) landed the Japanese Guineas with an impressive late charge on Sunday to give his trainer a Classic success only three years after opening his stable.
A son of Stay Gold, like last year's Triple Crown winner Orfevre, Gold Ship was sent off just over a 6-1 chance before taking the 202 million yen (£1.57m) event by two and a half lengths over World Ace. The favourite Grandezza was fifth.
Taking the inner route from the back of the field, Gold Ship hit the front a furlong out and pulled away for a comfortable victory over World Ace, who stumbled at the break and deserves credit after being forced wide.
