Handicap snip Ramona favourite at Taunton
IF handicap ratings from the Flat can ever be relied upon to provide a pointer for jumps racing then Ramona Chase would appear to have bundles in hand for his handicap debut in the 2m1f hurdle (2.40) at Taunton today.
Ramona Chase, by Derby winner High Chaparral, showed useful form on the Flat reaching a top rating of 95 and is a half-brother to this year's Racing Post Trophy winner Kingston Hill.
He ended his career on the Flat with a rating of 83 but three runs over hurdles, the last of which came on April, have resulted in him being beaten 82 lengths, 125 lengths and 90 lengths.
Dropped in grade for his fourth start over hurdles and starting off from a handicap mark of just 69 - 26lb lower than his best on the Flat - bookmakers have taken no chance and made the eight-year-old favourite.
With his main market rival Agapanthus a non-runner, Ramona Chase is into 5-2 (from 7-2) with Betfred, bet365 and Coral while he is 11-4 (from 5) with William Hill and 3-1 (from 5) with Ladbrokes.
The other runner to catch the attention of punters today is Phosphorescence in the 1m4f maiden at Kempton (4.50).
Trained by Lady Cecil, Phosphorescence is 8-11 (from 9-4) with William Hill, 4-5 (from 9-4) with Betfred and 4-5 (from 11-8) with Boylesports.
