King fourth as Fegentri title goes to Henriksson
AMATEUR rider Rachel King's good run in the Fegentri women's international championship came to an abrupt end last weekend, just when she needed it to continue in the final leg in Mauritius.
Lambourn-based Tina Henriksson, representing her native Sweden, had a record-breaking second successive title in the bag before the runners went to post, but King was one of five riders with a chance of second spot, which Britain had occupied for the previous two years with Gemmy Gracey-Davison and Ruth Jefferson.
Instead the luck of the draw, which determined who got which ride, ran out for King. She was paired with an outsider, Final Frontier, who ran up to his market position, despite his rider's best efforts.
King slipped to a share of fourth place in the championship with Delphine Garcia-Dubois, of France, who led throughout.
King, whose day job is stable secretary to Clive Cox, said: "Final Frontier was off the bridle from the start, and at the end I think I could have run faster than him.
"Never mind, the series has been a fantastic experience and I've had the chance to visit and ride in places I wouldn't otherwise have done."
