'Underrated' Soprano primed for Oaks assault

PAUL DEEGAN believes people have "underrated" his bet365 Lancashire Oaks contender Midnight Soprano who heads to Haydock "in the form of her life" for Saturday's Group 2.

Midnight Soprano, owned and bred by James Monaghan, progressed from handicaps to Group level last year and returned to action last month with a win in the Group 3 Noblesse Stakes at Cork.

The six-year-old will be taking on her biggest task to date at Haydock having never previously run in a Group 2 but Deegan feels opponents and punters alike would be wrong to dismiss the chances of his mare.

He said: "She's in the form on her life and has improved from Cork. Unless the ground is very quick she'll run and will put it up to them. My mare is underrated.

"I wasn't expecting her to win at Cork. We've very few options and this is an opportunity we couldn't afford to miss. I would probably say her best trip is a mile and six, but her best form is probably over a mile and a half, so I'm not worried about the trip."

Midnight Soprano has the weight of history against her on Saturday with no Irish-trained winner of the race since Park Express in 1986.
