CAUSE OF CAUSES followed up his Ladbroke success by accounting for the tenderly-ridden Midnight Game in a head-bobbing finish to the three-runner opener at Navan.
For much of the 2m contest, it looked like Davy Russell on leader Midnight Game had things under control, particularly from three out as Davy Condon became more animated on Cause Of Causes and Hisaabaat wilted away.
This impression was reflected on the exchanges where 6-4 winner Cause Of Causes touched a high of 37-1, but clearing the last the scrubbed along Gordon Elliott-trained five-year-old moved alongside his rival.
On the run to the line Russell started to get to work on the hat-trick seeking Midnight Game but it proved in vain as although the pair, who could not be separated on official ratings beforehand, flashed past the post in unison, the photo showed Cause Of Causes had just prevailed.
Elliott had earmarked the race as a prep for the Betfair Hurdle on February 9 and BetVictor go 10-1 (from 12) about Cause Of Causes for the Newbury showpiece.
Elliott said: "It was a cat and mouse race and a stronger gallop would have suited better but he tries his heart out every day.
"We'll go for the Betfair then look at Cheltenham."
