TRAINER Jeremy Scott claimed Melodic Rendezvous had unfinished business after missing the Supreme Novices' Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival last season and the seven-year-old Grade 1 winner went some way to proving that when beating the Triumph Hurdle runner-up Far West.

If the burden of carrying the top weight of 11st 10lb was not enough, Melodic Rendezvous slipped coming around the bend into the final straight and did not jump the penultimate hurdle smoothly, but he showed his speed and class under the guidance of Nick Scholfield to beat the Paul Nicholls-trained four-year-old by a length and three-quarters at odds of 9-2.

"On todays performance you would have to think he will be staying over hurdles," said Scholfield. "He will have to step up on this to become a Champion Hurdle contender but that is not out of the question as he will come on for the run."

Winner of the Grade 1 Tolworth Hurdle at Sandown last season, Melodic Rendezvous was well fancied for the Cheltenham Festival opener before a bad scope ruled him out just days before the race.

With this his fourth victory on the spin, Melodic Rendezvous laid his Champion Hurdle credentials there for all to see and Paddy Power make him a 16-1 shot to dethrone Hurricane Fly at Cheltenham.
