Wolf Moon eclipses handicap hurdle rivals

Report: Cheltenham, Friday Handicap Hurdle 3m, new course

TRAINERMartin Keighley, who withdrew stable star Any Currency from the 3m2½f handicap chase on account of the ground at Cheltenham, gained some compensation when Wolf Moon landed the Handicap Hurdle on Friday.

The 3m contest - worth over £10,000 to the winner - was won last year by Big Buck's and while Wolf Moon may not be up to his class, he is certainly a horse on an upward curve.

This was his fourth win in his last six starts and jockey Wayne Hutchinson said: "Martin said he was guaranteed to stay and he just idled in front."

As with most of Cheltenham's races on Friday, this was riddled with non-runners and eight horses, including the top six, were withdrawn.

Wolf Moon, owned by Louise Jones, was settled in midfield as the Philip Hobbs-trained Pancake took the field along at a decent clip.

His challenge ended approaching the turn in and Wolf Moon was bravely committed to the front by the enterprising Hutchinson.

He did idle on the run in but always had enough to score from Balthazar King.
