Maarek could yet take his chance in Ayr Gold Cup

MAAREK, successful in Group company last weekend, could yet run in Saturday's William Hill Ayr Gold Cup as trainer David Nagle confessed he was having a change of heart about the race.

The five-year-old beat Starspangledbanner in the Greenlands Stakes at the Curragh on Saturday after which Nagle said he would consider the Prix de l'Abbaye on Arc day and the British Champions Sprint Stakes at Ascot for Maarek's next run in October.

Maarek picked up a 5lb penalty for his win at the Curragh which would mean running off top weight but with ground conditions likely to be on the easy side Nagle may let him take his chance.

He said on Monday: "We're having a bit of a re-think. He came out of his Group 3 win at the Curragh very well and with the ground currently good to soft and more rain forecast he'll probably travel. He's going to have 10st, so we're planning to book a good 5lb claimer."

Maarek is as short as 10-1 favourite with Betfred although sponsors William Hill make him a 16-1 chance and Coral go as big as 20-1.
