UAE: Dubai World Cup runner-up Lizard's Desire, who lost the world's richest race in the narrowest of photo-finishes, is suffering from a debilitating and often fatal hoof inflammation.
The five-year-old gelding has laminitis, believed to have been brought on by an earlier bout of enteritis (inflammation of the intestine), and is now undergoing treatment at owner Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Maktoum's Dubai farm.
Trainer Mike de Kock was quoted on his website as saying: "Ninety-five percent of the time laminitis is deadly, but he's fighting it with all the determination and courage he showed us in his racing. We’re hoping he'll pull through.
"He’s a great character. To do Dubai as hard as he did and then go on to run so well in Hong Kong and Singapore says a lot about how special he is.
"It's heartbreaking for everybody because he's done a hell of a lot for many people, and the country."
Lizard's Desire was memorably denied victory in the Dubai World Cup earlier this year, after coming out second-best in a photo-finish with Gloria De Campeao.
He then went on to contest the QEII Cup at Sha Tin in Hong Kong, once again finishing second, before finally achieving international Group 1 glory in the Singapore Airlines International Cup, in which he reversed the placings with Gloria De Campeao.
