Former champion apprentice calls time

TALENTED rider Miguel Blancpain is going to hang up his boots after riding at Craon on Monday.

The 23-year-old said at Longchamp: "I am having problems doing the weight - my natural weight is 62 kilos and I just can't go on.

"I've had nearly 300 winners during my career and I have some ideas what I might be doing in the future. I was born in Spain and that is where my heart is."

For many years, Blancpain has been attached to Carlos Laffon-Parias. "He has been struggling with his weight and it has been a very difficult decision for him to make," said the trainer.

"Miguel started with me when he was 14 and was my apprentice. He will be a big loss. He is a very intelligent young man and I wish him all the very best in thefuture."

One of the best horses Blancpain rode was Delfos, who won the Prix du Prince d'Orange in 2004 and the Group 2 Prix d'Harcourt the following year.

He also won a couple of Group 3 races on the late Maktoum Al Maktoum's Laverock.

Blancpain was also champion apprentice in France in 2002 and was very popular with the French racing public.
