Mad Rush begins Melbourne preparations

LUCA CUMANI'S preparations for another tilt at the Emirates Melbourne Cup will begin in earnest this week when this year's candidate, MadRush, is set to begin quarantine.

The trainer, who took second place with Purple Moon last year, plans to follow the same path with Mad Rush, who will contest the Caulfield Cup on October 18, before lining up at Flemington Park on November 4.

Mad Rush, narrowly beaten in the Prix Kergorlay on his latest start, willbe joined in quarantine by stablemate Bauer, who will also make the trip to Australia, though is not yet guaranteed a place in the Melbourne Cup field.

Cumani's wife Sara said: "Mad Rush is taking the same route as Purple Moon did last year, so he will run in the Caulfield Cup before the Melbourne Cup.

"Bauer will go for the GeelongCup (October 22), which he has got to try and win to get into the Melbourne Cup."
Last year‘s Ebor winner Purple Moon finished sixth at Caulfield before going down by half a length to Efficient in the Melbourne Cup.

He has not raced since and, following a setback earlier in the year, may not be seen out again until early next year at the Dubai Carnival. "He had an injury early on in the year and he is on the way back and the plan is to take him to Dubai," said Cumani.

"He has got to have fast ground and the chances of getting that now are slim, so the idea is to campaign him abroad from now on."

Godolphin are also committed to taking anothershot at the Melbourne Cup and will place All The Good - winner of the Ebor replacement race the Newburgh Handicap - into quarantine on Thursday. The five-year-old may have a prep race in Australia, probably in the Caulfield Cup, before bidding to improvehisyard's record of two seconds and a third from 12 starters.
