Danadana delivers for Fallon in Huxley Stakes
Report: Chester, Thursday
Stella Artois Huxley Stakes (Group 3) 1m2f75y, 4yo+
DANADANA came from the clouds to collar his rivals close to the finish on rain-softened ground under another masterful ride from Kieren Fallon.
The jockey, who partnered Banoffee to a sweet victory in the Cheshire Oaks on Wednesday, asked the 100-30 favourite for his effort a long way from home, but the pair picked up smartly down the outside to win going away.
Highland Knight, who attempted to make all, fared best of Andrew Balding's two runners, with the disappointing Bonfire weakening to the rear of the field in the final furlong.
Danadana was having his first start of the campaign for trainer Luca Cumani following a fruitful four-year-old season, but he was dead last for most of the contest and appeared not to enjoy the ground and track throughout.
Gabrial, strongly fancied by owner Marwan Koukash, was also settled towards the rear as Highland Knight and Bonfire led the field down the back straight.
Fallon was niggling away at Danadana when Highland Knight kicked for home with the straight in sight, and Gabrial began to make his move under Spencer.
But as soon as Danadana was angled towards the outside, he began to hit top gear and swept past Highland Knight to score convincingly, and in the manner of a horse with a bright future.
Matt Cumani, assistant trainer, said: "The ground looks quite loose and we know he doesn't like soft ground, then round the first bend it loked as if he might be heading for Chester town. Royal Ascot is the target, probably the Wolferton.
