Ask The Butler handed Newbury task

TOTESPORT Cambridgeshire favourite Ask The Butler has been given a more immediate objective in the John Smith's Stakes at Newbury later this month.

Luca Cumani's gelding is only 8-1 with the sponsors - some other bookmakers have different market leaders - and he could still make the big Newmarket handicap on October 4.

But the trainer has only confirmed stablemate Swop to be Cambridgeshire-bound so far. He finished third to Ask The Butler in the Best Odds Guaranteed At Stakes at Sandown over the weekend.

Cumani's daughter Francesca, writing on, said: "He will stick to a mile and two furlongs for the time being with the next possible target being the John Smith's Stakes at Newbury on September, a race we won with Monte Alto last year.

"Swop has been the model of consistency with two wins, two seconds and now a third to his name.

"Saturday was just a furlong too far for him but he should see out the one mile and one furlong trip of the Cambridgeshire well and that is where he is heading next."
