Nargys bounces back with Sceptre success

Japan Racing Association Sceptre Stakes (Group 3) 7f, 3yo+ fillies and mares

NARGYS bounced back to form in no uncertain terms when notching the first win of her three-year-old career in the Group 3 Sceptre Stakes on day two of the St Leger festival.

Without a win since landing her maiden at Yarmouth in August last year, the Luca Cumani-trained filly came home a length and three-quarters clear of Switcher, who edged out Winning Express by a nose to fill the runner-up spot.

Winning jockey Andrea Atzeni said: "She travelled really good and loved the ground. She has always been a nice filly and has won well.

Atzeni was keen to get cover for Nargys in the early stages and when a yawning gap appeared the filly picked up well to stretch clear of a chasing pack which also included Annecdote and Maureen, who finished in a heap.

Having chased home Just The Judge in the Rockel Stakes on her last juvenile start, big things were expected of the Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum-owned filly.

A 1,000 Guineas bid was scrapped after Nargys trailed home last in the Nell Gwyn and although she managed fourth in the Sandringham, three below-par runs - including a ninth-placed finish at Pontefract last time - have followed.

"Last time at Pontefract she was drawn wide and things didn't go right for her," added Atzeni.

"Today things went right and she showed how good she is. It is nice to see her back in form and hopefully she will go on to better things."
