Only Answer the unquestionable victor

Longchamp: Prix du Petit Couvert

ONLY ANSWER appears to save her best efforts for Longchamp and held on well on Sunday to take the Qatar Prix du Petit Couvert by half a length from the fast finishingRock Harmonie.

The favourite Stern Opinion was again a little disappointing and he began to run out of steam running into the final furlong, before taking third place.

This was not a top class sprint but Only Answer won in good style and was winning her second Group 3 at Longchamp this season, as in May she had lifted the Prix de Saint-Georges, again ahead of Stern Opinion, who had the upper handwhen the pair met at Deauville in July.

Pierre Yves-Bureau, racing manager for Only Answer's owners the Wertheimer Brothers, said: "She definitely seems to have a liking for Longchamp and also for five furlongs. She didn't quite get home when unplaced in the Maurice de Gheest. Today's race was a trial for the Abbaye de Longchamp and that's where she'll be going now.

“We know the opposition will be much stronger in three weeks time and we are likely to come up against African Rose and Marchand d'Or, who are currently the best sprinters in Europe."

Second-placed Rock Harmonie istrained, like African Rose, by Criquette Head-Maarek, who said: "She is a bit immature and inexperienced but has a lot of speed. The filly will become a good sprinter when she fills out.”

Stern Opinion did not go through with his challenge, and Pascal Bary said: "He ran well but this race might have come a little quickly since his last one 15 days ago. He could go for the Prix Seine-et-Oise."
