Elna Bright squeezes home at Lingfield

Report: Lingfield, Saturday

Betdaq The Betting Exchange "Super 7" Handicap (Qualifier) 7f, all-weather

LIAM KENIRY'S decision to take thedaring route up the inside rail paid dividends as Elna Bright just got up to pip the well-backed 6-1 joint-favourite Atlantic Storyat Lingfield.

Course-specialist Atlantic Story and jockey Jamie Spencer looked to be holding off all challengers when hitting the front halfway up the home straight, but Keniry managed to squeeze Elna Bright past Benandonner just in time to catch the leader.

Formerly trained by Richard Hannon and David Evans, the8-1 winner scored by a head for trainer Brett Johnson and owner Peter Crate, with Atlantic Story holding on for second and The Scorching Wind third at 9-1.

Crate is now eyeing the £50,000 final of the "Super 7" series at Lingfield on Winter Derby Day, March 20. He said: "Buying him was a team effort - Brett found him and I paid for him!

"I bought him to win the John Smith's Mile at Brighton (last August), but that came too soon after we claimed him. He just wasn't fresh enough, but he was only beaten a short-head finishing like a train so we knew we had a tool.

"He'll come back for the final and he'll also have an entry in the Lincoln. After that, he'll have a well deserved break."
