Main Sequence 16-1 for Derby after Lingfield win
Report: Lingfield, Saturday
Betfred Derby Trial Stakes (Group 3) 1m4f, 3yo colts and geldings
MAIN SEQUENCE is as short as 16-1 for the Investec Derby after extending his unbeaten run to four with a smart success over 5-4 favourite Shantaram.
The first two pulled well clear of the other six runners and look capable of stepping up to a higher level.
Winning trainer David Lanigan is leaning towards a crack at the Derby, with William Hill offering the best price of 25-1 (from 40) for Main Sequence.
Shantaram struck for home off the turn but Ted Durcan was quick to cover the move on Main Sequence, who took a lead he never relinquished despite the favourite's gallant efforts.
Main Sequence, a 3-1 chance, won by three-quarters of a length, with Cavaleiro (20-1) six lengths back in third.
Lanigan said: "He has earned his place at Epsom now. We need to sit down with the Niarchos family and Alan Cooper [the family's racing manager] and discuss it, as he is in the French Derby as well."
Durcan said: "It was great. We went a nice level gallop the whole way and I had him switched off. He learned a lot from that and it looks like he will stay a mile and a half standing on his head. He'sa lovely horse in the making."
