Cold spell could continue to cause havoc next week

THE cold weather showed little chance of respite on Saturday with the Met Office reporting that the frost which claimed Sandown and Wincanton could continue into next week.

The south of Britain is set to be the worst hit by the freezing temperatures, with Tuesday's card at Leicester in jeopardy due to a frozen track.

A Met Office spokesman said: "The cold is set to continue, especially in the south. It will get less cold in the north through the week.

"The forecast is not always dry with the chance of light rain and snow around on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday but in no great quantities - only about a centimetre in places.

"The forecast is for hard overnight frosts, particularly in the south, right through into next week. It should be less cold in Scotland and some places may escape the frost.

"The trend is for the north to get warmer with the cold hanging around in the south."
