Laytown: recent heavy rain will not affect the racing surface

BRITAIN and Ireland's only beach-racing meeting at Laytown on Tuesday is expected to go ahead without a hitch, despite the country being plagued by heavy rain since Saturday.
The tides mean the racing is a weeklater than it was in 2009 and, while waterproofs instead of the sunglasses are likely to be required, course manager Kevin Coleman on Monday assured the racing would be unaffected.
"The rain doesn't affect the racing surface, the concern would be the storm water running off the houses and roads on to the shore," he said. "When water hits sand it cuts into it and creates streams, but we have already dealt with that over the years and will again be on top of it tomorrow.
"The times of the tide won't change either and it will be less pleasant than recently, but I've been on to Met Eirann this morning and, whilethey're still giving rain, the winds will be changing and by race time tomorrow it will have eased off and will possibly clear later."
The first race is off at 5pm and the seven-race card ends with a qualified riders' 7f contest at 7.30pm.
