CELTIC SWING, who produced one of the outstanding performances by a two-year-old when winning the 1994 Racing Post Trophy by 12 lengths, died on Thursday in Italy where he was at stud after a brief illness.
The horse, who went on to win the Prix du Jockey-Club the following year and finish second in the 2,000 Guineas, was put down at the Allevamento di Besnate near Milan after suffering an acute bout of colitis.
Celtic Swing was 18 years old and still in the ownership of Peter Savill, the former BHB chairman, who owned him throughout a brief but outstanding racing career under the care of Lady Anne Herries, having bought him on the recommendation of jockey Kevin Darley.
"He was the best horse I've ever had by far and the best I am ever likely to have," said Savill.
"He was an absolutely brilliant racehorse."
