Taquin to step up in trip after Sandown reverse
TAQUIN DU SEUIL, who suffered his first defeat over fences when third in the Racing Post Henry VIII Novices’ Chase at Sandown on Saturday, will return to a longer distance after convincing trainer Jonjo O’Neill he is not up to Grade 1 standard at two miles.
After switching to chasing Taquin Du Seuil won over two miles at Ffos Las and two miles five furlongs at Cheltenham, where he beat Oscar Whisky. However, he found Hinterland and Grandouet too quick when finishing third back over the minimum distance at Sandown in a performance littered with jumping errors.
His latest effort has convinced his trainer to abandon thoughts of a challenge for the Racing Post Arkle Chase.
“I wasn’t unhappy with the horse,” he said. “He made a couple of mistakes but ran on really well from the Pond fence to halfway between the last two.
“It was a very good race and for me he looked like he wants two and a half miles. He will go for the Dipper at Cheltenham on New Year’s Day. We learned a lot on Saturday, mainly that he wasn’t good enough for two miles and we will go two and a half.”
