Inaccessible Kempton forced to abandon card
KEMPTON has been forced to abandon its Wednesday meeting due to an inaccessible track.
Officials started to work on the track, which was covered with 4cm of snow, first thing in the morning and declared it raceable following a second inspection at 10am.
However, there was concern as to how accessible the track was and a third inspection was set for noon.
But, shortly after 11am, the decision was taken to abandon the card as it became apparent that raceday officials would not be able to reach the track.
A philosophical Barney Clifford, clerk of the course at Kempton, explained the decision: "We had to abandon in the end due to poor accessibility to the course. The track is perfectly raceable and we were determined to give the meeting every chance.
"However, it soon became apparent that officials, vets and doctors were going to struggle to get to the track for racing and the sensible decision was to abandon."
Kempton is set to stage a meeting on Thursday, but will have to pass an inspection at 8am. Clifford added: "We are due to race on Thursday but we will have to inspect again."
Earlier, the day's only only other surviving meeting, an all-weather card at Lingfield, was also abandoned due to snow, leaving no racing at all on Wednesday.
