Ambivalent grabs certain success in Pretty Polly

Report: Curragh, Sunday

Oxigen Environmental Pretty Polly Stakes (Group 1) 1m2f, 3yo+ fillies & mares

AMBIVALENT made every yard of the running under jockey Johnny Murtagh to hold on in a tight finish for trainer Roger Varian.

The win came as another note of Murtagh's continued potency in the saddle despite taking out a licence to train earlier this year having also claimed the prize for top rider at Royal Ascot.

Murtagh kicked his hooded mount straight into the lead and the four-year-old found plenty for pressure as she was challenged left, right and centre in the final yards.

Both Shirocco Star and Was came close to catching the leader but they could not find quite find enough to get to the Ali Saeed-owned winner, who returned at 10-1.

Was, who was sent off favourite after pre-race favourite Alive Alive Oh was withdrawn having been in season, finished second with Shirocco Star third.

Varian said: "She's run well in her two starts this year but both races were tactical and we held her up and she was gassy. I said to Johnny we've got nothing to lose and that we'd change tactics and go forward.

"She's always worked incredibly well at home and I'm delighted she's put it into practice today."

He added: "We'll get her home sound and healthy and enjoy this first but she has plenty of options at a mile and a quarter and a mile and a half."
