Akeed Mofeed not certain for Derrinstown says Oxx

AKEED MOFEED is not a definite runner in Sunday's Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial after trainer John Oxx said on Wednesday that the race might come too soon for his Classic hope.

A general 12-1 chance for next month's Derby, the son of Dubawi was last seen in action last September when finishing second to David Livingston in the Juddmonte Beresford Stakes.

Oxx said: "The race [Derby Trial] might be coming a bit too soon for him and we'll give him another bit of work and we'll see.

"We'll leave the decision about Sunday until Friday morning and take things from there."

Akeed Mofeed has already missed one Classic after lameness ruled him out of the Qipco 2,000 Guineas.

Oxx has also entered Rubina on Sunday's card but she is an intended runner in the 1,000 Guineas Trial.

She made her seasonal return in a similar event won by subsequent Qipco 1,000 Guineas heroine Homecoming Queen.

"It [the race] turned out to be better than everybody thought at the time," said Oxx, who added: "She is still exposed at that level but has a high enough rating, so she'll take her chance."

The ground at Leopardstown was described as soft on Wednesday with heavy rain forecast overnight.

Racing manager Nessa Joyce said: "There is rain on the way and they are talking about an inch of rain overnight.

"A lot of the time it has broken up by the time the rain band gets to us but we'll have another look at the track in the morning.

"The saving grace is the forecast is a lot brighter for Friday, Saturday and Sunday."
