NUMBER THEORY'S love affair with Haydock continued as he saw off the late charge of Quiz Mistress to land the course's longest-standing race.

Tepmokea and Becausewecan set a strong pace in the testing conditions and the 8-1 winner, along with Dreamspeed, looked to be going best as he loomed up behind the leaders.

Becausewecan fell away and Dreamspeed could not maintain his effort as Number Theory took over from the game Tepmokea with two furlongs to run.

Lexi's Boy, sent off the 2-1 favourite, failed to give trainer Donald McCain another victory in a prestigious Flat handicap as he failed to quicken up the home straight.

Quiz Mistress (12-1) stayed on strongly at the death but Number Theory had just enough in reserve for jockey Russ Kennemore's 1lb overweight not to be an issue.

He scored by a neck while Tepmokea (33-1) was a length and a quarter back in third.

The victory, the biggest of trainer John Holt's career, was Number Theory's fourth from just seven starts at Haydock. He had been placed on the other three visits to the track.

Holt said: "He's improving and improving and Russ gave him a lovely ride. I have been training about seven years and this is the biggest win of my career. I don't think he's stopped improving yet."
